1/10/2012 BUCHANAN, N.Y. – Control room operators removed Indian Point’s unit 2 nuclear power plant from service this morning to repair one of four pumps that supplies cooling water to the plant’s reactor. The pumps are located inside the containment building. There was no release of radioactivity and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was notified of the shutdown. The plant will return to service when the maintenance work is complete. Unit 2 operated for 230 continuous days prior to today’s shutdown. Unit 3 continues operating at full power and has been online for 278 continuous days since returning to service following a refueling shutdown Indian Point Energy Center, in Buchanan, N.Y., is home to two operating nuclear power plants, unit 2 and unit 3, which generate approximately 2,000 megawatts of electricity for homes, businesses and public facilities primarily in New York City and Westchester County. |
